ABOUT

The Narungga people are the traditional custodians of Guuranda (Yorke Peninsula), our land, waters, and sky Country—all of which were never ceded. Our cultural heritage spans thousands of years, woven deeply into the fibres of our Country, culture, and community. Our ancestors bore witness to the rising waters, and now our lands are embraced on three sides by Sea Country, a profound reminder of our connection to all life. We are dedicated to sharing our story and creating new ones through a living, evolving culture that honours our lores/laws, and traditions, revitalises our Narungga language, and deepens our connection to Country.

As the Narungga Nation Aboriginal Corporation (NNAC) we bring our people together and celebrate culture while building a resilient, sustainable economic foundation for our community. We are committed to bridging generations by connecting our youth with Elders, empowering them to carry forward our legacy, and nurturing the Narungga leaders of the future. In honouring our past, we shape a vibrant future that will continue to thrive on the strength and wisdom of our people and our Country.

CULTURAL LEGENDS

Long, long ago in the days when birds and animals were still men and women, there arose an argument between Robin Red Breast and Willy Wag Tail, called Chintrin by our people.

Robin Red Breast was a very cocky fellow who was always bragging about what he could do. One day, Willy Wag Tail challenged Robin Red Breast to a fight. So they got their spears and the fight began. Willy Wag Tail dodged this way and that way to avoid the spears of Robin Red Breast until, finally, he ran out of spears to throw.

Willy Wag Tail then pointed up with his spear, and stabbed Robin Red Breast in the chest. To this day, the Robin Red Breast has a red breast and the Willy Wag Tail never stands still because he is still trying to dodge the spears of Robin Red Breast.
